Dots and Boxes

Dots and Boxes is a "Territorial-Closure" strategy game based on "Graph Theory." The technical core involves placing edges to form cycles (boxes). It is a "Zero-Sum" game of patience, where the early game is about avoiding "Third Lines" and the late game is about executing "Chain Captures." The player who closes the fourth side of a box claims it and gets an extra turn.

You see a grid of dots. Players take turns drawing one line between two adjacent dots. Your goal is to complete the fourth side of a 1x1 square. Doing so scores a point and grants a "Bonus Turn." The game ends when the grid is full. The early game is passive (drawing lines that don't complete boxes), while the end game is explosive (chain reactions of box closures).

Winning the grid depends on "The Double-Cross Strategy." Avoid creating "Long Chains" for your opponent. If forced to give up a chain, use the "Sacrifice Move" (Double-Cross): leave the last two boxes of a chain open. This forces the opponent to close them and then open the next long chain for you. This "Parity Control" ensures you take the majority of the board in the final exchange.
